Taking an Avalanche safety course is the first step when making a move into the Backcountry. Instructors Dave Enright, Bill Glude and Jon Conway are professional members of the Canadian Avalanche Association and between them have decades of experience instructing recreational & professional avalanche courses. The Avalanche Skills Training (AST) courses have been developed by the Canadian Avalanche Center and are considered the standard in recreational avalanche training.

This training is delivered in conjunction with the Evergreen Backcountry Guides, training avalanche safety and guiding the Hakuba backcountry professionally for over 20 years. You are in the hands of experts.

Intro to Backcountry Touring Clinic (1 Week)


Ready to get out of the resort and find out what this whole touring business is about? Smart move! You’re about to truly experience the serenity of the mountains.

You will be gently immersed into the world of backcountry touring with the assistance of a certified guide and instructor, who will take your through the steps needed to set you up for success outside the resort.

This is a 7 Day Course where you will get:

  • 5 days of coaching & instructional backcountry touring
    • Rider development and off piste sessions.
    • Steep & deep skiing clinics
    • Guided backcountry touring days
    • Video analysis sessions
    • Advice on purchasing your own AT equipment (if interested)
    • Advice on efficient use of equipment
    • Pack organisation & advice on nutrition for touring
  • OPTIONAL: Add a 1 day Companion Rescue Skills (CRS) course to your week!
    • Backcountry first aid
    • Emergency search & rescue procedures

10 Weeks in Hakuba…

So you’re passionate about the mountains and you’ve finally found the time to do a snow season…? Why not take this opportunity to learn everything you need to know to maximise your experience.

This 10 week program will give you the chance to earn your instructor certification to fine tune your riding, then focus your attention on the backcountry with a streamlined program that takes you through to the AST 2 & CRS course.

With a tonne of quality guided instructional touring time in the mountains, you will be able to make informed decisions and risk assessments with your friends in the backcountry, and finally, we will step you through essential medical, search and rescue skills to get you and your crew out of trouble if the unexpected does happen.

Our courses are delivered by internationally recognised, fully certified ISIA instructor trainers, avalanche and wilderness first aid professionals.

You are about to become a well rounded and mountain educated ‘Snow Pro’, you will develop your riding and push your knowledge to next level where you could progress further to becoming an apprentice guide.

This is a 10 Week Program where each week you will have 5 days of training provided and 2 days off, where you can either go freeriding or come along on a cultural tour organised by Evergreen.
