CASI stands for the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors. Internationally recognised, a Level 1 instructor certificate from CASI is a great first step to beginning a snowsports career, the Level 2 is a significant next step, and the Level 3 requires serious investment in time both training and teaching. Facilitated by internationally recognised CASI Instructor Trainers, we have certified hundreds if not thousands of instructors here in Hakuba – you could be next!


CASI LEVEL 1 SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE

You should take this course if you love to snowboard, and have a desire to introduce new students to snowboarding. You should be confident and comfortable both communicating and demonstrating in front of a group.

Am I Ready?
The Level 1 Instructor standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:

  • Spend time working as an assistant/apprentice instructor, in order to see a beginner lesson in action.
  • Book a lesson with a current CASI Level 1 Evaluator to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard.
  • Complete the Level 1 course preparation workshops, available online at www.casi-acms.com

Pre-requisites
*15 years of age on the first day of the course
*Must be fluent in either English or French
*Able to demonstrate comfortable and safe riding skills on intermediate terrain

Description
The CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor certification course is open to strong intermediate snowboarders, aged 15 years and older. Candidates on the Level 1 Course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods across a variety of venues, both on-snow (up to and including intermediate terrain) and during indoor presentations.

The CASI Level 1 course is an introductory course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to begin their role as a new instructor in the industry. Beginner teaching methods, understanding of basic snowboard technique, as well as lesson planning and effective communication skills will be addressed.

Candidates will receive coaching on their snowboarding, as well as feedback on their teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 1 standard in both of these areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach beginner snowboarders up to the Novice Turn level.

The Level 1 certification is a pre-requisite for the CASI Level 2 Instructor certification, as well as the Park Instructor course.

  • CASI Level 1 Prep Course – 2 days
  • CASI Level 1 Course and Exam – 3 days totaling a minimum of 18 hours (including evaluations)
  • CASI Level 1 Prep Course, Course and Exam Package – 5 days (highly recommended and best value)

CASI LEVEL 2 SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE

You should take this course if you are a Level 1 Instructor with some teaching experience, love to teach, and have a desire to take your teaching skills to the next level. You should be confident and comfortable demonstrating intermediate to advanced riding in corresponding terrain.

Am I Ready?
The Level 2 Instructor standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:

  • Spend time working as an instructor, honing your communication, analysis and group management skills.
  • Book a lesson with a current CASI Level 2 Evaluator to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard.
  • Complete the Level 2 course preparation workshops, available online at www.casi-acms.com

Pre-requisites
*Current CASI Level 1 Instructor
*Must be fluent in either English or French
*Able to ride on advanced terrain and carve controlled turns on intermediate terrain.

Description
The CASI Level 2 Instructor certification is for any snowboarder that has passed the Level 1 certification, and has an interest in teaching more experienced snowboarders. CASI recommends that Level 2 candidates have prior experience teaching snowboarding in a snow school setting (approximately 45 hours) before attempting the Level 2 certification. This is not a mandatory requirement, and all Level 1 members are welcomed on the course, however, it is recommended in order to help ensure success at the Level 2 evaluations.

The goal of the Level 2 course is to develop a skills-based teaching approach for intermediate and advanced snowboarding, as well as an understanding of CASI technique and methodology, and the role of snowboard teaching within the industry. It combines practical snowboard teaching methods, technical understanding and development, as well as development of guest interaction and technical analysis skills.

Candidates will receive coaching on their riding and teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 2 standard in both areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach snowboarders up to the Advanced Sliding Turn and Intermediate Carving level.

Level 2 is a prerequisite for the Level 3 certification.

CASI Level 2 Course & Exam – 4 days totalling a minimum of 24 hours (including evaluations)
CASI Level 2 Prep Course, Course & Exam Package – 8 days (highly recommended and best value)

As a qualitative alpine education provider, we provide examinations, but we also provide the training so you can get that certification. We genuinely want all our students to succeed and passing the Level 2 is not guaranteed, especially if you have never received any formal training for your teaching or riding skills! We STRONGLY encourage you to prepare yourself with the appropriate training before the exam.

There are instances when you may not need to take the preparation training – if you feel confident but are unsure of where you are at, then email us and we will give you our honest and professional advice as to your chances of passing.

CASI LEVEL 3 SNOWBOARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE

You should take this course if you are an advanced snowboarder who has passed the Level 2 certification, and are an interested in teaching advanced students and begin to train other instructors. The goal of the Level 3 course is to develop a skills-based and situational teaching approach for high-level snowboarding. Also, an understanding of CASI technique and methodology and an introduction to instructor training will be developed. It combines practical snowboard teaching methods, technical understanding and development, as well as development of analysis and session planning skills.

Am I Ready?
The Level 3 Instructor standards require you to pass riding, teaching and instructor training (pedagogy) evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:

  • Spend plenty of time working as an instructor, honing your communication, analysis and group management skills.
  • Ensure you are familiar with the CASI Level 1 & 2 course content and methodologies.
  • Attend training sessions with a current CASI Level 3 Instructor or Evaluator, to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard. The use of video analysis and feedback can be beneficial.
  • Following completion of the course portion, attend a 1-day Level 3 Exam Prep course.

Pre-requisites
*Current CASI Level 2 Instructor
*Comfortable on all types of terrain, including basic freestyle/snowboard park terrain
*Must be fluent in English

Description
The CASI Level 3 Instructor certification is for advanced snowboarders who have passed the Level 2 certification, and have an interest in teaching advanced students and begin to train other instructors. The goal of the Level 3 course is to develop a skills-based and situational teaching approach for high-level snowboarding. Also, an understanding of CASI technique and methodology and an introduction to instructor training will be developed. It combines practical snowboard teaching methods, technical understanding and development, as well as development of analysis and session planning skills.

Candidates will receive coaching on their riding and teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 3 standard in three areas: instructor training skills, riding skils (all-mountain freeriding and basic freestyle) and teaching skills. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach snowboarders up to the advanced level and lead introductory instructor training sessions. Level 3 is a pre-requisite for the Level 4 certification.

The Level 3 course is delivered in two phases: a course phase where material is presented, and an evaluation phase where exams are conducted. Candidates will leave the course phase with clear feedback regarding performance and potential. Candidates must register for the course and exams portions separately, and are encouraged to take the exams at a later date to allow for training and development time following the course portion.

5 days totaling 30 hours – course phase
2 days – evaluation phase
